Landlady: ‘I’m no rock granny’

Pub licensee calms neighbours’ noise fears

The White Lion pub

THE landlady of a Finsbury pub has assured neighbours she does not want to become a “rock ’n’ roll granny” and play loud music that disturbs them.
At a Town Hall licensing committee meeting on Tuesday, the White Lion in Central Street was granted an extension to its hours despite residents’ concerns over loud music.
Five residents who live near the White Lion said that, on the whole, they had a good relationship with the pub.
However, they feared an extension to its licence could mean late-night noise from music and from drinkers leaving the pub.
Neighbour Gretel Mitchell-Moubayed told the committee she was forced to move her daughter, Nile, to a bedroom at the other side of the house after problems with cigarette smoke from the pub.
Licensee Philomena Curtin assured residents: “I’m middle aged and not a teenager anymore.
“I don’t want to become a rock ’n’ roll granny and don’t want to upset the people around here.”
After the meeting she said that the pub did not intend to become a heavy metal or rap music venue.
Ms Curtin said everything from traditional Irish folk to pop music would be played, but it would stop at 11pm.
An acoustic engineer will visit the pub, where a noise limiter could be installed.
The committee granted the White Lion a licence to stay open until 2am on Friday and Saturdays and until midnight from Sunday to Thursday.
Live music will stop at 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
