THE stepson of Deputy Mayor of London Nicky Gavron collapsed
and died of heart failure while jogging to a health club, an inquest
heard on Tuesday.
Publisher Simon Gavron, 46, of Eton Villas, Chalk Farm, died suddenly
on March 31.
The son of millionaire Labour peer Lord Gavron, he was survived
by his wife, writer Martha Pitchey, and three sons.
The St Pancras inquest heard how passers-by alerted police after
they found Mr Gavron having a fit in Belsize Park Gardens, Belsize
Park.
Emergency services were called but were unable to save him.
No family members attended the hearing but in a letter read out
at the inquest Ms Pitchey said: The night before he died he
complained twice of indigestion pains and poked and prodded his
rib cage.
She said her husband had a high level of fitness, and loved swimming,
football and playing competitive rugby.
Ms Pitchey added: If he overdosed on anything, it was the
darkest chocolate he could find.
The court was told how Mr Gavrons body was subjected to a
second post-mortem after the first investigation proved inconclusive.
The cause of death was finally given as ischemic heart disease and
severe epilepsy.
Following the post-mortem, his family donated his brain to the Royal
Free Hospital in Hampstead for research.
Mr Gavron, who was remembered by 500 mourners at a non-religious
celebration of his life in April, had been diagnosed with frontal
lobe epilepsy several years earlier but had stopped taking his medication
after being free of fits for seven years.
The inquest was told his father had a history of heart trouble and
had undergone two bypass operations.
Mr Gavron, who was brought up in Highgate, spent his schooldays
at University College School in Frognal, Hampstead, and went on
to take a degree in history at Trinity Hall College, Cambridge.
Verdict: Natural causes. |
