HUNDREDS of bars and clubs have inundated the council with last minute demands to extend their hours under the new Licensing Act.
And residents are battling to prevent a deluge of late hours.
Westminster Council estimate that just over 60 per cent of its licensed premises have beat the August 6 deadline to submit applications for
But last senior councillors admitted a “substantial minority” have applied for the extension of their hours.
Residents associations have submitted hundreds of letters of objection in a bid to stave off yet later hours in the West End.
Just this week 109 pubs and clubs have applied to vary and extend their hours including the Gala Barracuda casino in Baker Street, which wants to stay open until 6am Monday to Saturday, the Marylebone Tup, in Marylebone High Street, which has applied to sell alcohol until 2am every day and the Penthouse in Leicester Square which wants to allow dancing and supply alcohol until 3am, every morning. Jo Weir, the chairwoman of the Covent Garden Community Association, said: “Most pubs and bars have applied for extra hours and we are in the process of putting objections in but it is a very tight deadline.
Stringfellow takes on new club
A FAMOUS celebrity haunt that was once closed following serious drugs allegations is set to be reborn as a new Stringfellows strip club.
Peter Stringfellow, who has run his eponymous club in Covent Garden for more than 20 years, has applied to open Stringfellows Soho in Wardour Street – in a site that is currently the Trap nightclub.
The Trap was in the centre of a investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Clubs and Vice Unit last September which revealed that drug dealing, involving cocaine and pills, was taking place inside and outside the club.
