LOSING THE BATTLE |
FRIGHTENING figures published this week reveal police are losing
the battle against violent crime in the heart of Islington.
In the wake of the killing of Richard Whelan stabbed to death
on a 43 bus two weeks ago police figures for six months,
from February this year, report a massive and disturbing rise in
incidents in Holloway Road. There were 430 offences, including 29
serious assaults, 15 robberies and 32 burglaries.
All these incidents were reported along just over a mile of Holloway
Road, between Archway Station and Nags Head.
Traders claim that police already over stretched because
anti terrorist duties are rarely seen and they are becoming
terrified of becoming a victim of gangs of youths trawling the area
looking for trouble.
To make matters worse the area which includes a heavy contingent
of illegal cigarette sellers harassing shoppers around the Nags
Head shopping centre has virtually no CCTV, which would have
identified criminals. |

| Have
a wee one afore ye go |
FROM confidante to bossy parent,
the role of your friendly pub landlord knows no bounds as regulars
will soon discover when they are reminded to spend a penny before
leaving for home.
Just as children are ordered to visit the toilet before a long trip,
several pubs applying for licence extensions at Islington Town Hall,
have been told to affix notices on their premises offering their
facilities in an attempt to put an end to the scourge of street
urination.
The fact that late night drinkers need a gentle reminder before
departing is a sad reflection of the times. It comes after a stream
of complaints by residents that customers are using the streets
as toilets. |
