DAN'S THE DADDY

The late theatre impresario Dan Crawford let others take the limelight, until now, writes Peter Gruner

AN unpublished manuscript has been unearthed detailing 30 years of the late Dan Crawford’s illustrious career at Islington’s King’s Head.
It has emerged that local historian Mary Cosh regularly met up with Dan to chronicle the history of the theatre from its beginning in the 1970s up until 2000.
“We started the project about ten years ago,” said Mary this week. “Dan would choose several significant shows for each year and I’d write about them using his anecdotes and newspaper cuttings from the time.”
The book details the pioneering shows, including the many revivals, that launched the careers of stars like Maureen Lipman, Ben Kingsley, Tom Conti, Victoria Wood, Nicola McAuliffe, Alan Rickman, and Janet Suzman to name but a few. However, while many actors and writers went on to fame and fortune, Dan – despite a multitude of West End and Broadway hits under his belt – lurched from one crisis to another forever fighting to keep the theatre out of the red.
Mary and Dan had been working on the book up to two years ago.
The sun won’t be the only thing shining at Kenwood

The Kenwood summer concerts are a conductor’s dream according to Nicolae Moldoveanu. Joel Taylor spoke to him

THERE is a clear buzz of excitement in Nicolae Moldoveanu’s voice as I talk to him regarding the Kenwood concert he is due to conduct on Saturday night.
His one major worry, though, is the weather.
“In terms of reward for the conductor,” he exclaims, “the programme is the best you can get. But it all depends on the weather.”
It is the third time that the Romanian-born, Swiss-naturalised, conductor, pianist and violinist, has performed at the Music on a Summer Evening series at Kenwood House.
