Green light for wind farm

A WIND farm is to be planted on the top of the roof of the main Town Hall building in King’s Cross.
The exotic project, which will cost the council in the region of £100,000, has had environmentalists drooling since it was first brought to public attention in a New Journal exclusive earlier this year. It was finally approved by councillors on Thursday night.
But the five turbines, which will be attached to Town Hall’s extension building in Argyle Street, have not impressed everybody.
Conservative councillor Jonny Bucknell said the wind farm would be a waste of cash and could only generate enough electricity to power five hair-dryers.
Planning chiefs who gave the scheme the green light said they hoped the project will send out a message to other major institutions that they must consider alternative ways to generate energy.
Environment supremo Councillor John Thane could hardly contain his excitement as the permission was granted.
He said: “This is milestone achievement in Camden’s commitment to becoming a greener borough. We believe this development will make us the first Town Hall in the UK to have wind turbines, and King’s Cross a centre of progress and hope for the future.”
Camden’s Green Party were also quick to welcome the final go-ahead.
Chairman Adrian Oliver told Thursday’s meeting: “Some people will like it but it is what it represents. This may become iconic. We have to take responsibility for the way we are living. This is a small step but it represents a giant leap for the community.”
But Conservative Councillor Dawn Somper said: “It sounds so experimental, we need to know lots more before going ahead.”
