OI! Calm down Grooves fans, you are taking the Demo of the
Week contest a little too far.
Sure, its north Londons most competitive unsigned
band column but, crumbs, dont get hot under the collar if
you dont make it in.
This week one promoter whose band missed the cut was clearly livid-mad.
One minute, he was insisting that his band should deffo be in
DotW the next he was emailing us insisting: I dont
really, honestly give a fish finger if you review the album/band
or not.
Ok, he used a word ruder than fish finger.
DotW was never meant to be like this. It was designed to shine
the spotlight on the best of the fringe circuit. This weeks
top dogs are Luxury of Feeling Fine, an ace girls-and-guitars
team heading to Camden Town next month.
A free copy of this paper to anybody who can honestly say they
have heard of this band before. Give them a spin and you will
find these five old-before-their time 18-year-old girls conjure
a superb blend of guitar melancholy. Its a bit of a reverse
to the Pinetop Perkins story (see preview). While PP is defying
the limits his age should place on him by tearing up keyboards
into his 90s, a band like Luxury of Feeling Fine defy their age
with a maturity beyond their years.
They really are worth a look.
Normally at this point Grooves would advertise a band website
but all the online stuff is in Norsk and only the DotW fanclub
in Oslo would get it.
So instead of spending your evenings surfing the information superhighway,
get down to the Dublin Castle in Parkway on August 9.
Your band could be DotW. Just send a promo to Demo
Of The Week, Grooves, 40 Camden Road, Camden Town, NW1 9DR. Most
memorable demos are featured.
