Hyperion’s last stand?

TALLIS’S GAUDE GLORISA
Hyperion

POOR Hyperion. Having lost its court battle with scholar Dr Lionel Sawkins over copyright, leaving them with costs nearing £1 million, the independent classical label has admitted that its position is very “precarious”.
So to make savings, it has announced it will be “dramatically” reducing its commitments to new recordings.
But that hasn’t stopped it putting out the latest Cardinall’s Musick collection recording Tallis’s Gaude Glorisa dating back to the 16th century.
The ensemble, led by Andrew Carwood, recorded the piece at the enchanting Fitzalan Chapel at Arundel Castle, in January this year and the production really benefits from the marvellous acoustics.
Little seems to be known about the actual date of composition but it certainly appeared in a 1775 volume called Cantiones Sacrae, a volume published by Tallis and his fellow composer William Byrd.
Following the traditional liturgy of the time Tallis created a haunting, wonderful piece.
The performances from a company such as the Cardinall’s Musick is unsurprisingly excellent with their floating ethereal voices they fill the chapel
We need labels like Hyperion to put out this music. It might not hit the classical charts, or create shockwaves but here is a terrific recording, beautifully produced and well worth investigating.
