Dolls on brink of stardom

THE SOHO DOLLS – STRIPPER
Loser-Friendly Records

IT has been a while since we last checked on The Soho Dolls but I ran into them again this week and discovered they are still making smart progress.
Last year they were Demo of the Week winners, punching their way into pole position with their slippery electronica-guitar clash.
This year they are the talk of the town with records in the shops and tour dates with guitar-munchers The Bravery.
If their meteoric rise isn’t an advertisement for the power of this column, I don’t know what is.
One-day readers will be demanding Grooves merchandise, printed T-shirts, mugs, mouse mats and the like. But that’s for another time. For now, we can point you towards Soho Dolls’ new single, Stripper, which hits the records shops on Monday morning.
New single Stripper is one of the best tracks they have come up with yet, surpassing last year’s single Prince Harry.
There has been a little shake-up. The Soho Dolls are now a two-boy, two-girl team – remember they were once an all-female trio.
But lead vocalist Maya is still in control of things with her now-familiar icy chants and smooth choruses.
Stripper is a ferocious record – a storm of guitar and echoing vocals.
Grooves is fully aware that readers like bands to be compared to another in reviews but The Soho Dolls have a genuine sound clash which makes sound-a-likes difficult to source.
Maybe Blondie are your best bet, possibly No Doubt on a good day – but neither really do them justice. Instead, Stripper could be the record that puts them on the map in their own right. Good luck to them.
