LSO DISCOVERY MUSIC FESTIVAL
ST LUKE’S, OLD STREET

ANOTHER summer festival and this time it is at the London Symphony Orchestra at St Luke’s in Old Street, who have put together an entertaining programme blending amateur musicians and professionals.
The fun begins with a timpani and percussion concert on Saturday and other features include a Balinese gamelan workshop on Sunday and an inter-generational recital on Thursday.
Perhaps the greatest treat, however, has been reserved for Sunday when one of the world’s greatest cellists Mstislav Rostropovich (pictured) is appearing to rehearse with the LSO.
This will be something to be seen. Rostropovich is now nearly 80 and made his debut in 1942.
He is acknowledged as a leading piano accompanist and has conducted the world’s greatest orchestras and since 1977 has been the musical director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington.
His association with the LSO goes back to 1974 and he orchestrated the Sergei Prokofiev’s centenary festival in 1991.
And now he is to lead a rehearsal and entrance is free. But be sure to book as places are bound to be snapped up. Ring 020 7382 2524 for more information.
