Evil
Nominated for an Oscar last year, this Swedish drama begins as a ‘teen revolt’ film and turns into something much more. Co-written and directed by Mikael Hafstrom, this moody, beautiful drama doles out pernicious and frightening scenarios, transforming what could have been just another school drama into something extraordinarily moving.

In My Father’s Den
This powerful family drama with a twist hails from New Zealand and centres on a war photographer who comes back to his homeland, only to become involved with a young woman who may or may not be his daughter. Heavy on the sentiment but loaded with terrific performances from Matthew MacFadyen and Emily Barclay.

Torremelinos 73
Think a Spanish Boogie Nights and you’ll not be far off in this surprisingly sweet look at the pornography industry when a naive couple join in to pay off some debts. Director/writer Pablo Berger wrings laughs and tears from this fantasy situation.
