Demo of the Week – Josie Benson
IT’S been a while since a smooth soul voice wiped the indie bands off the Demo of the Week ladder – it seems there is a never-ending supply of ‘I’m-in-a-band’ folk who are still struggling to imitate Oasis.
What a relief when Josie Benson’s demo hit the doormat. It would have been a crime for it not to feature here.
Her tasty two-track demo gave Grooves a double take, so much does it sound like something released by one of the big house or US garage labels.
If you had told me this was being put out by Azuli or Slip n’ Slide, I would not have been surprised.
This is deepish house music which is just as good to chill out in the sun to as it is to dance to.
It’s dance music for the summer sun loungers.
Benson has a fabulous voice, surfing icy keys, a few background bleeps and shifting percussion with such precision that it is surely only a matter of time before somebody takes notice of Summertime, the opening song.
The song is an epic – but it’s so hypnotic that you can forgive the minor quibble of the intrusion of spoken word French in the middle.
I don’t want to use the phrases uplifting or feel good – this is not Radio One.
But follow-up Coming Together is another track which reminds you of summer sunshine and dancing into the early hours on some Spanish patio.
This CD is one for the keep pile.
n If you think the next DotW winners should be your band, then send in your promo for consideration. Demo Of The Week, Music Desk, 40 Camden Road, NW1 9DR.
Unfortunately, demos cannot be returned.
