| Just one candidate for controversial job |

Heather Schroeder |
CAMDEN Council is to put forward just one applicant for the
controversial new post of Children’s Director.
Heather Schroeder (pictured) – currently the Town Hall’s
social services boss – is the only candidate who will
face an interview for the job.
The process will anger school governors who say the job should
have been advertised nationally to maximise their chances
of finding a suitable candidate who has expertise in both
social services and education.
The new role is part of a massive shake-up at the Town Hall
in which five departments are being merged into just three.
Camden’s highly-rated education department will be twinned
with social services in a super-department aimed at improving
children’s services and communication between staff.
The major changes are part of obligations laid out in last
year Children’s Act which followed recommendations published
after an inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbie, an abuse
victim in Haringey.
Rebel school governors have warned that the changes are being
pushed through too quickly and that the new Director must
have experience of handling educational issues.
But a council press official confirmed last night (Wednesday)
that Ms Schroeder is unchallenged in the race for the job.
She insisted that Camden had followed established guidelines
in going ahead with just one interview.
The spokeswoman said: “Camden Council is committed to
finding the right members of staff with the relevant skills
for the job to provide the high quality services Camden residents
deserve. The process for all the new Director appointments,
including the Director of Children, Schools and Families,
follows the council’s long established personnel policies
and procedures. To have done otherwise would have been entirely
wrong for an employer that is serious about its obligations.” |
