Martin ‘Too Much’ Power |
UNBEATEN Martin ‘Too Much’ Power was the toast
of the borough on Friday night when he was crowned British
Bantamweight Champion.
The 25-year-old former Haverstock School pupil, who began
his career at St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club 15 years ago,
beat Dale Robinson on points at Elephant and Castle.
Power said: “I’m over the moon and can’t
explain how I feel, I’m just so happy.
“It was a really tough fight and it could have gone
either way but coming towards the end I started getting
a bit stronger.”
Power, now unbeaten in 17 professional fights, needed all
his strength to see off the Huddersfield-based 24-year-old.
The former Commonwealth flyweight champion is ranked 39th
in the world and boasted a professional record of 17 wins,
eight knock-outs and one loss.
But Kentish Town-based Power, who is ranked 81st in the
world, had the edge over the 12 rounds and won on a referee’s
decision of 116 to 113 points.
Power inflicted a gash over his opponent’s eye in
the second round.
But the Yorkshireman showed his pedigree, battling back
despite the bloody wound to push Power to the very last
round.
“We knew he was a tough little fella,” said
Power. “The whole fight was like a mini war with neither
of us taking steps back and both trying to land punches.”
The victory now means Power will get the chance to punch
his weight with the best in the world as it paves the way
for shots at European and World titles in 12 to 18 months
time.
