Charity plan to boost funds

THE Highgate Society has voted overwhelmingly in favour of becoming a charity, a move that will boost revenue.
Chairman Robin Fairlie told members of the 1,000-strong voluntary organisation – which aims to make Highgate a better place to live in – that the society was finding it increasingly difficult to cover its costs.
Charitable status would provide an additional £3-4,000 a year through tax relief on costs and membership subscriptions.
The new status would also help raise more money for good causes.
According to Mr Fairlie, the new constitution would “in no way constrain the society in continuing to do what it has done in the past or might wish to do in the future”.
The resolution was approved by a 73-1 vote.
