Assurance in row over bus stand move

Cllr John Thane

THERE are no plans to move a controversial bus stand to a beleaguered Hampstead street, according to Town Hall environment chiefs.
Camden Council’s environment supremo, Labour councillor John Thane, has furiously denied suggestions from some residents that the Town Hall is secretly planning to site a permanent bus stand in Fleet Road.
In an angry exchange of emails with Fleet Road resident Avril Lee, who has accused the council of ignoring the views of residents, Cllr Thane said: “It is not the case that I, or indeed anyone within the council to my knowledge is seeking to place a permanent bus stand in Fleet Road.
“The proposal comes from other local residents, as you well know.”
The council is monitoring the temporary siting of the No 24 bus stand in Fleet Road while resurfacing work is carried out at South End Green.
In January, the Town Hall agreed to extend the 168 bus stand in the Green despite strong objections from campaigners, who argued that a permanent bus stand in Fleet Road would provide the best solution to a long-running row.
But Fleet Road residents say the temporary stand is causing chaos and that they will vigorously resist any proposals to make it permanent.
Resident Alexander Naydenov said: “Day after day the situation is becoming unbearable. Fleet Road is usually congested with cars, impatient drivers sometimes use their horns and we are surrounded with loud engine noise and breathe a lot of exhaust vehicle gasses.”
Ms Lee added: “We in Fleet Road feel our voices are not being heard and that the road is up for grabs yet again. I have lived in Camden virtually all my adult life but feel thoroughly disheartened and disenfranchised by the whole episode.”
