Home’s rusty look alarms neighbours

SEVENTEEN neighbours have objected to plans to demolish a Hampstead home and replace it with a more contemporary design finished in rusted steel.
The Sugarman family want to rebuild their home in Heath-skirting North End using high-tech, fashionable materials including Cor-Ten steel, which is designed to rust, giving the property a burnished red effect.
But objectors say the design is too “stridently modern” for the Hampstead conservation area.
But English Heritage and the Hampstead Conservation Area Advisory Committee have no objections, while leading conservation group the Heath and Hampstead Society are concerned that the building overlooks other properties and is made of “harsh materials with short-term lives”.
The Town Hall planning committee will take a stroll around the area to decide whether the proposed house will fit in before the next planning meeting on April 18.
