Plea to spend money on sordid Bloomsbury street |
ENVIRONMENT bosses have been warned that a principal Bloomsbury
street has become seedy, sordid and tawdry.
Max Neufield, secretary of Charlotte Street Association, led a
deputation of residents who told last Wednesdays full council
meeting that Goodge Street has been left to rot.
Residents are calling for a £300,000 scheme of improvements
already mapped out by consultants hired by the Town Hall
to be pushed through. Mr Neufield said: The present
condition of Goodge Street is very tawdry and pedestrian unfriendly.
It really does look very seedy and sordid.
Tesco, which has a store in the street, has pledged £100,000
towards improvements but the cash will cover only a third of the
cost of the complete facelift.
Camden deputy leader Labour councillor Phil Turner said that discussions
with residents would continue in May.
He said: Camden did employ a specialist consultant to design
the Goodge Street improvements. Camden is now converting a detailed
engineering scheme, which should be ready by the end of May.
When it is done, they will share it with Charlotte Street
Association and consult residents. We are seeking a number of
sources for funding.
