Plea to spend money on ‘sordid’ Bloomsbury street

ENVIRONMENT bosses have been warned that a principal Bloomsbury street has become seedy, sordid and tawdry.
Max Neufield, secretary of Charlotte Street Association, led a deputation of residents who told last Wednesday’s full council meeting that Goodge Street has been left to rot.
Residents are calling for a £300,000 scheme of improvements – already mapped out by consultants hired by the Town Hall – to be pushed through. Mr Neufield said: “The present condition of Goodge Street is very tawdry and pedestrian unfriendly. It really does look very seedy and sordid.”
Tesco, which has a store in the street, has pledged £100,000 towards improvements but the cash will cover only a third of the cost of the complete facelift.
Camden deputy leader Labour councillor Phil Turner said that discussions with residents would continue in May.
He said: “Camden did employ a specialist consultant to design the Goodge Street improvements. Camden is now converting a detailed engineering scheme, which should be ready by the end of May.
“When it is done, they will share it with Charlotte Street Association and consult residents. We are seeking a number of sources for funding.”
