The Redgraves united in breast cancer battle

The Redgrave’s are a renowned acting dynasty. Here Lynn Redgrave tells Sunita Rappai how her daughter helped her fight breast cancer

SHE has spent most of her life in front of the camera but this was a role she could never have prepared for. When Lynn Redgrave, actress, mother and member of one of the most famous acting dynasties, was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2002, she decided, with her daughter, to embark on an extraordinary project.
The result is a series of photographs by daughter Annabel Clark, at the time a 21-year-old photography student in New York, that chronicle Ms Redgrave’s journey through the disease.
The actress, who was just four months short of her 60th birthday, underwent a mastectomy of her right breast in January 2003, followed by a gruelling six-month regime of chemotherapy and radiation.

The blood and tears of winning the vote

In his final book journalist Paul Foot, who died recently, reminds us how much blood was spilt to win the the vote, writes Illtyd Harrington

Paul Foot, who died last July, was not just a superb journalist who challenged injustice against individuals and clung fiercely to his socialist principles.
For several long years he lived with a serious spinal problem but this never seemed to still his political passion and his commitment to equality and working class struggle.
In The Vote, a culmination of 15 years’ thought and detailed research, he makes the case for political and economic democracy. As Britain yawns its way to a May general election, his historical record is a ringing reminder of the long and often painful march to democracy. And in his hands it is a graphic and vast panoramic view of a continuing power struggle.
