The squalid flat

Chris Fishman

HE once served the rich and famous at a tobacco shop in ritzy
Park Lane.
But Camden social services client Chris Fishman, 69 on Tuesday,
now finds himself living in squalid conditions.
The kitchen at his flat in Parkway, Camden Town, is blackened
with dirt and filth and the sticky carpets have begun to peel
back.
Struggling with mobility and breathing problems, Mr Fishman, who
has no relatives to help him, finds it impossible to look after
himself and keep his home clean.
Worried friends this week questioned why a regular home help has
failed to ease the problem. Mr Fishman, who needs help to get
out of the top-floor flat, said: I am fed up. I have problems
with moving around because I have had so many falls. I need to
get a taxi to go to the shops in Camden High Street. It is difficult.
A move to sheltered accommodation fell through on Thursday.
Volunteers at Camden Town Neighbourhood Advice Centre are now
urging the council to take immediate action.
Charity worker Barry Sullivan said: How has this gone on
for so long without it being reported?
People going into the flat must have realised there was
a problem. Chris wants to stay in his home but it is clear he
cant look after himself. He is visited by carers three days
a week and finds it extremely difficult to manage the rest of
the time.
Camden Council yesterday (Wednesday) labelled Mr Fishman a habitual
hoarder.
Reacting to New Journal inquiries, a council press official said:
On a few occasions Camden Council has managed to carry out
a cleaning blitz on Mr Fishmans property. This has basically
involved cleaning the house from top to bottom and removing any
dangerous refuse.
He is a habitual hoarder and has frequently refused care
and support for many years and has specifically refused assistance
to keep his home clean. Camden Council currently provides him
support for his shopping and laundry.
He added: The council is keen to ensure Mr Fishman gets
the support he needs and has offered him sheltered accommodation
and hopes he will accept this offer shortly.
Camden Council believes this is the best way to meet his
needs.
