Parrot protesters take to the streets

Campaigners say bar is no place for exotic birds

Lula and Pinga

PROTESTERS have been handing out leaflets outside a Camden Town bar calling for the release of its caged parrots.
Two weeks ago the New Journal reported a growing internet campaign to free Lulu and Pinga, the two African grey parrots on display in Made in Brasil in Inverness Street. But now the cyber campaign has broken through to the real world as two women handed out leaflets on a busy Friday night to punters entering the bar.
A posting to the parrot-link.co.uk messageboard by one of the protesters – known by the username Fox – read: “People were really interested, and the response was BRILLIANT. We didn’t try to stop people going in, we just politely handed them the leaflets as they approached the bar.”
Bar staff called the police, who warned the protesters to keep it peaceful.
Fox returned alone the following night, afterwards posting that there were “loads of people stopping and talking to us on the street saying they felt uncomfortable with the parrots being in the bar”.
Campaigners say the bar is too noisy and the tank too exposed for the parrots, but bar owner Chris Singham assured the New Journal that the parrots were well looked after and that the tank kept out both noise and smoke.
The RSPCA said that an inspector had on several occasions visited the bar following complaints to tell Mr Singham that the conditions were “not ideal”, but no further action is currently being taken.
Fox has promised to continue leafleting outside the bar. Mr Singham has declined to comment further.
