Road veneer will look cheap
|
A SCHEME to re-lay pavements along the length of Kentish Town
Road has come under fire as residents say the plans will make
the street look cheap.
Camden Council engineers plan to rip up the tarmac that covers
the walkways at the moment and replace it with a veneer-like fake
paving.
But residents and traders are claiming the scheme, which may see
a lino-style veneer laid down the length of the road instead of
traditional paving stones, is a cheap and ugly option.
Caroline Hill, from the Kentish Town Residents Action Group, said:
We do not want a cheap job done.
Workmen are unable to lay normal slabs because Victorian cellars
lie beneath the street and engineers do not know how much
weight they can take.
Ms Hill added: Some of the cellars are not in a good way
and there are fears proper pavements would not be safe. But we
are very unhappy about the veneer.
A council spokesman said they had hoped to get the pavement work
started but it had been delayed by work to replace street lamps.
A trial stretch running from Regis Road past nine shops is due
to start in the second week of April.
