Parking zone a hit one year on
|
CONTROVERSIAL parking restrictions introduced in Highgate last
year have been hailed as a success by residents.
The controlled parking zone (CPZ) which came into effect in March
last year throughout Highgate ward is up for review by environment
chiefs on Tuesday.
New signs, parking bays and pay-and-display machines to enforce
the restrictions sparked outrage last year among residents, who
complained that they were expensive and unnecessary.
But John Plews, spokesman for Highgate Business Circle, said that
on the whole the CPZ had worked well.
He said: The council should be applauded for introducing
the two-hour parking zone, which stops people parking all day.
What we really need in Highgate is a public car park, but
that is a whole different ball game.
George Georgiou, who runs Continental Stores in York Rise, Dartmouth
Park, agreed the controls were working fine.
He said: We could do with more pay-and-display machines
at the moment they are only on one side of the road
and there are too many signs but our business has not been affected
by the restrictions.
David Shelbourn, who chairs the traffic and transport committee
of 1,000-strong residents group the Highgate Society, agreed
the CPZ had, on the whole, worked reasonably well.
But he added: We are still concerned about the number of
signs in the area. In some spots, there are three signs which
basically say the same thing.
We will be doing an audit on the signs next week.
