Teachers win maternity deal
|
TEACHERS in Camden have clinched one of the best maternity
pay deals in the country.
Senior Labour councillors agreed at a cabinet meeting last Wednesday
to allow teachers 12 weeks off on full pay.
The deal is an improvement on the current allowance of four weeks.
The decision covers staff in community schools but education bosses
will press voluntary-aided schools to follow suit.
Most other inner London councils give between two and ten months
maternity leave for mothers.
Camdens education chief Labour councillor Nick Smith said:
I am delighted we have agreed this excellent deal for teachers
in Camden.
Combined with the good pay and conditions already on offer
in the borough, this considerable improvement in maternity pay
will help ensure Camden teachers enjoy one of the best packages
in the country.
The excellent package we offer to teachers is crucial for
recruitment and retention, and recognises their important contribution
to delivering high-quality education in our schools.
NUT branch secretary Kevin Courtney said: We are pleased
with this outcome.
It is very positive for Camden teachers.
This is one of the best deals in London. We are confident
it will contribute to the recruitment and retention of teachers
and help improve educational prospects for pupils in Camden schools.
