Radical Jews in the Victorian East End

Peter Gruner looks at how a wave of immigrants coped against the prejudice that is still so prevalent today

THE Conservative Party said very similar things about mass immigration more than 100 years ago, according to a fascinating historical book, just re-issued.
In those days it was Jews and foreign anarchists who it was claimed were swamping the East End with their different culture and language which local inhabitants found threatening.

Twelve is not the magic number

Ocean’s Eleven – Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 remake of the 1960 Rat Pack heist movie that starred Frank Sinatra and pals – boasted slick direction, an all-star, to-die-for cast that included George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, and a flashy robbery set in glitzy Las Vegas. It was tons of fun, perfect popcorn entertainment that the stars happily promoted, clearly having had as much fun off screen together as they seemed to be having in front of the camera.
