Jester festival fun will go on

ONE of Camden’s longest running festivals has been narrowly saved from the axe.
The future of West Hampstead’s popular Jester festival, staged in Fortune Green every July for more than 30 years, looked to be in jeopardy when the organisers felt they could not go on.
Bad weather last year, which saw stallholders braving rain, hail and even sleet over the festival weekend, left many wondering whether the festival should continue.
But now a new group of organisers has been formed, coordinated by West Hampstead Community Association (WHCA), and made up of some of the original supporters and members of groups like West Hampstead Amenity and Transport.
The new group has set a date for this year’s festival – July 9 and 10 – and is calling for more people to get involved.
Dave Howell, who chairs the organising committee, said: “Though last year was awful, there was still a remarkable turnout for the festival, which showed the strength of feeling in the community for it.
“Now we want to involve more local people and get the festival back on its feet.”
The festival receives a small grant from Camden Council but is mainly funded through sponsorship, income from stallholders and advertising revenue from the festival magazine.
Mr Howell said: “We have to find other ways of stimulating income and I am reasonably confident about getting some more private funding if we do this. The live music programme will continue and stalls and side-shows will be out as usual.”
