Plans for child centre rejected

PLANNING bosses have turned down a charity’s bid to build a childcare centre in King’s Cross after hearing how the building would overshadow valuable open spaces.
Children’s charity Coram Family had hoped to build the four-storey centre on land between Brunswick Square, Mecklenburgh Square, St George’s Gardens and Coram Fields.
Gillian Darley, from Friends of St George’s Gardens, said the building would destroy the privacy of the gardens, which she called an oasis for elderly residents – a view shared by ward councillor Sue Vincent and committee chairman Councillor Brian Woodrow.
But Labour councillor Geethika Jayatilaka said said: “We talk about children and childcare being a priority for the borough. In an area like King’s Cross, which is crying out for more childcare, I would need to see some pretty concrete reasons to turn this down.”
A tied vote by councillors meant that Cllr Woodrow as committee chairman had the casting vote, which he used to reject the proposal.
He said: “Future generations will curse us if we give this proposal the go-ahead. I have not been convinced by the report and would propose that we reject it on the grounds that it is detrimental to the area.”
