Final whistle blows for pitches after 20 years
|
WORK is about to begin on a football pitch and water feature
that will form part of the controversial Swiss Cottage redevelopment.
Matches were played on the existing pitch, at the rear of the Winchester
Project in Winchester Road, for the last time on Friday.
The games, organised by the Winch youth project, celebrated almost
20 years of football on the three tennis court-sized pitches, set
to be replaced by a smaller FA standard five-a-side pitch and a
water feature.
Council officials say the new pitch will be more appropriate for
five-a-side games.
But after the final games, Tory councillor Piers Wauchope said it
was sad that there would be no sports facilities at the site until
December.
We campaigned against it at the time and its sad that
its come to this, he added.
The closure has seen the Winch reduce its after-school sessions,
which have moved to Rowley Way in Kilburn. About five annual tournaments
are expected to be cancelled.
Sports development officer Lily Labonte-Hurst says the set-up is
not ideal, as the Winch has no minibus and extra staff are needed
to walk the children to Rowley Way.
Im trying to be positive, she said.
Its going to be a difficult task this year to offer
sports provision and keep things going because of staffing and lack
of funding.
Winch officials fear they may not be allowed to resume sessions
on the new pitch when it opens.
But a council press official told the New Journal: Well
definitely discuss with them what they are going to need it for
but well make sure that their needs are fitted in as well
as other users.
