Ban estate agent hoardings
|
RESIDENTS have called for ugly estate agents hoardings
to be banned from conservation areas.
Belsize Residents Association has demanded that Town Hall
planning chiefs take tougher action against estate agents who put
up signs in the area.
Residents say that regulations allowing one board, although it can
carry two signs, outside a property are impossible to enforce, and
are regularly ignored by estate agents.
Dudley Miles, from the residents association, said: We
have been campaigning against the signs for over 20 years and we
are hoping the council will finally take action against them.
There are often five or six signs on a property at any one
time and they are left there long after the property is sold, so
these companies can basically get free advertising.
He added: The council is concerned that a total ban will be
costly to enforce but we think it will be cheaper in the long term.
The move is backed by Gene Adam, from Belsize Conservation Area
Advisory Committee.
She said: There is a total ban on these signs in some areas,
like Hampstead, which we would like to see extended here.
Our committee is concerned with the visual appearance of the
area and these signs are very, very unsightly.
But Malcolm Terry, managing director of Parkheath Estates, which
has an office in Belsize Park, said firms had a right to advertise
their properties.
He said: The council has been vigorously enforcing the regulations
recently, which has really made a difference in the area.
So long as the regulations are enforced, I dont believe
there is a need for a total ban.
The issue is due to come up at a planning meeting at the Town Hall
on February 10.
